What Do Your Travel Destinations Say About Your Design Style?

Updated: Aug 3

I don't travel as much as I used to, but I loved to travel because of the inspiration I would get from every trip I made.

I find that the destinations I love to travel to always inspire my design style.

One of the questions we like to ask a potential client when we are in the beginning stages of understanding their style is:

What are your favorite places to travel to or go on vacation?

Their response is usually a tell-tale sign of what their style in design and decorating might be.

A client who loves a lot of bright colors and a more vibrant space tend to love vacationing in places like the Caribbean, Mexico, Indonesia, Greece

These places naturally have beautiful blue waters on the beaches, lots of greenery in the mountains and landscapes and even the architecture tends to be more colorful.

For those who love to travel to places like parts of Africa - maybe on Safari, they tend to enjoy more subdued color story with lots of textures, ethnic vibes and maybe some spice tones as accents.

Clients who love to visit places like Japan are usually drawn to a strong sense of culture, calm and connection to nature, and want that to be reflected in their home.

They tend to like a cleaner, simpler, more purposeful aesthetic.

Clients who love a space that feels a bit more authentic and storied, with rich art and accents that depict points in history are drawn to places like the Jordan, western parts of the USA with canyons and rock formations.

They love a lot of texture and earthy colors that are layered in a more monochromatic way.

Clients who are drawn to Paris are usually more into trends and aesthetics where fashion-forwardness lead the way.

They usually love the idea of designing with brands that they love, which becomes a part of the design layers - maybe a well-appointed closet with glass doors to showcase their high-fashion finds.

One of my personal favorite places to travel is the English countryside. I love the architecture of the old houses and the rolling hills with sheep grazing.

It feels so calming and simplistic, yet the homes that dot the landscape command such a presence.

One place I would love to travel is to Positano Italy.

I just love the vibrant architecture and beautiful beaches. Just seeing how the homes seems to just hang off the cliffside is quite intriguing to me.

I imagine that a client who loves Positano as a destination who love the vibrant colors to be incorporated in their space.

I have never had the desire to go skiing, but I imagine that clients who love ski vacations love the quiet calm and pristine white environment all around them.

I would imagine they love a space that is layered in shades of cool white and feel fresh and clean.
