Remember this Kohler TV commercial from years ago?
I thought it would be fun to do the same thing, except with an item from your wardrobe.
I came across this divine little ruffled mini dress on Anthropologie, which made me want to go back in time to when I was at the right size and the right age to pull it off :-) But alas, I will do the next best thing and use it as inspiration for an imaginary room design.
Imagine stepping into a room that feels like the perfect outfit come to life: bold, flirty, feminine, luxurious, and colorful. This is the essence of designing a space inspired by the Celia B Amor Ruffle Swing Mini Dress. Just as a striking dress can set the tone for an entire look, it can also serve as a powerful design inspiration for a room.
Let’s explore how to build a room around this dress, layer by layer, turning fashion into interior design inspiration.
Starting With The Dress As Design Inspiration
The dress features a playful ruffle silhouette, a bold color, and a feminine charm that feels both luxurious and approachable. The dress’s soft swing shape creates a sense of movement and joy. This dress itself is a mood, a statement, fun, and a source of design inspiration.
How would you translate this into a room?
The first step is to identify key elements from the dress:
The rich color that can form the palette for the room: Rich reds, soft pinks, deep greens, gold tones and hints of cream
The ruffled texture: Light, flowing fabric with ruffles suggests softness and layering
The overall vibe: Flirty, feminine, and confident with a touch of luxury
These elements can then become the foundation for the room’s design.
Choosing the Color Palette
Since the dress is a rich red tone, I would start with a bold red wall as the backdrop. Ideally I would do a shimmery silk grasscloth wallpaper versus paint for some texture to capture the dress’s vibrant energy. If paint is chosen, panel molding on the walls would add some structure. The bold choice of red sets a dramatic tone and creates a warm, inviting atmosphere.
Be sure to layer various shades of red so the room doesn't feel stiff. Never exactly match the exact same color in multiple pieces all over the room.
Balance the red with soft pink accents in textiles like throw pillows, or an area rug. These touches add femininity and softness, echoing the dress’s ruffles.
Incorporate deep green in accent tables, pillows, light fixtures and even some of the upholstered pieces to bring in natural contrast and richness. The green complements the reds and pinks while grounding the space.
Add gold for shimmer and rich luxury to the space.
Be sure to include cream or off-white elements in furniture or accents to lighten the room and prevent it from feeling overwhelming.
Finally, bring in whimsy and an element of playfulness with neutral shades of an animal print pattern.
Selecting Furniture And Textures
The dress’s flowing silhouette inspires furniture choices that feel elegant but comfortable. Look for pieces with curved lines and soft edges rather than sharp, angular shapes.
A plush, velvet sofa in a soft pink, gold or cream color adds luxury and invites relaxation. Velvet’s tactile quality mirrors the dress’s softness.
Add a statement armchair in green or a bold pattern like an animal print to introduce contrast and a touch of drama.
For surfaces, choose a marble coffee table with a modern silhouette for a classic and timeless touch.
Layering textures is key; starting from the wallpaper to the chairs and pillows and even the credenza. Introducing both visual and tactile texture will add luxury to the space.
Incorporating Patterns And Accessories
Even though the dress is solid, a layered mix of pattern will make for a more eclectic and feminine space. Find a rug that has a bold pattern and includes a version of the dress color as a key part of its color story. Then use the color palette of the rug to incorporate more color and patterns to the room.
Metallic accents in gold or brass bring a luxurious touch. Consider a gold-framed mirror or art, light fixtures that incorporates gold accents, and decorative accessories.
Add feminine accessories like vintage perfume bottles, delicate vases with fresh flowers, and art prints featuring soft florals or abstract shapes. In this case we incorporated an original ballerina art piece.
Lighting should be soft and flattering. Use table lamps with silk fabric shades and a chandelier or pendant light with crystal or glass details to add sparkle. Here we chose a gorgeous vintage bubble table lamp, wall sconces and a bold green glass chandelier.

Creating The Mood Board
A mood board helps visualize how these elements come together. Your mood board should include all the key elements arranged in a way that tells a visual story of how the colors and patterns will interact.
This mood board acts as a guide to keep the design cohesive and true to the dress’s spirit.
Layering The Room
Be sure to create a space plan for the room to see how all the furniture pieces will be laid out. Avoid pushing the seating up against the walls. Create a more intimate feeling in the space by the way you arrange the furniture.
Make sure that the rug is large enough that all the seating pieces sit fully on the rug. Then add all your case goods and accents and then accessorize and style.
Each layer builds on the last, creating a room that feels like the dress itself: bold, flirty, feminine, luxurious, and colorful.
