Every space can benefit from great artwork!
I believe that artwork is one element that brings authenticity to a space.

I see situations where it can become an empty and pretentious exercise, or just a way to fill walls.
But I believe that art should chosen for how they make you feel.
If you are just getting your art collection started and you are not quite sure how to curate pieces that will be harmonious in your space, here are a few tips:

Start with what speaks to you

Art speaks to each of us in different ways. There may be something that draws you in that maybe someone else cannot see. Especially when it comes to more abstract art, where it is open to your interpretation.
If you get that feeling of love and adoration for the piece, then it is a great place to start.
Mix genres

It is quite ok to mix different genres of artwork that speaks to you. You are not just limited to either abstract or realism or landscape or street art.
Mixing art is what gives your home a collected and storied feel.
Mix sizes

It creates a more interesting and collected space that as you curate your art collection, you choose pieces that are varying sizes. Some framed, some not.
As you display art, you can create special vignettes or gallery or salon style displays, which add interesting layers to a well-appointed art collection.
Commission something special
You may have something in mind that doesn't exist. Why not commission a special piece to be created for you. I have sone that a few times and have loved every piece.
I like to just give the artist a general direction and then let them have creative freedom to do what they do.
Of course you would want to choose an artist that aligns with the style that you are looking to create.

Think of it as investing
Original art can be pricey, but art can be a great investment. If you choose carefully and hold on to these pieces for a while, you would be surprised to find out that they have gained in value over time.
Original or mass-produced?

If a piece speaks to you, then I would not worry so much about whether it is a mass-produced piece or original. Art selection is a very personal thing.
Of course with an original piece, you are the only one who owns that piece, but mass-produced pieces can also be very impactful and well-loved in your home. I would limit my choices to ones where the artist has controlled the number of prints they will allow to be made of the piece. But even if that is not the case, buy art that you love.
Visit art museums for inspiration
If you are unsure what to choose, visiting museums, artists spotlights and even events like Art Basel can bring inspiration.

Step out of your comfort zone
Maybe you've always just loved a nice calm landscape scene. Why not experiment with something that pushes you outside of your comfort zone - like a graffiti mural! Ok, that may be a bit extreme, but try collecting something a little different.
Art is not just for walls

There are many artists who have digitized their work and make it available in other media such as flooring, textiles, soft goods, ceramics etc.
Art is not limited to your walls. Incorporate interesting art on others areas in your home.
Art doesn't have to match your interior
When it comes to art, you don't have to try to exactly match your interior space. For example, the color and genre doesn't have to be identical to the room
The art should lead, and maybe a neutral background created around it using elements of design. Or you can purposefully create a juxtaposed design with the art as the centerpiece.

Support local artists
As you look to build your collection, start with local artists first.
Every major city tends to have an art district where you can find art shows and museums displaying the work of local (and sometimes) starving artists.
