Your Fashion Style Says A Lot About Your Decor Style

I was talking to my good friend Georgia recently, and asked her why she never pursued interior design to some level.

Georgia is one of the most stylish people I know. Her impeccable sense of style for the way she puts together her outfits illustrates a strong sense of self expression. And from her great style in clothing, she has over the years, styled her homes in a very similar fashion.

She has the ability to mix patterns in what she wears in a way that is bold, timeless, but yet sophisticated.

Georgia, never wears makeup and she always wears her hair naturally. And for me, it says a lot about her and how she expresses her style in her home.

She loves some level of natural, organic and pure design (much like her hair and no-makeup choice)

She loves to mix patterns in ways that others would think don't quite work together, yet through the balance and proportions of the patterns, they work perfectly.

She loves an element of timelessness. In her outfit layers she always adds something like a houndstooth or tartan for their traditional timelessness.

She loves a good splurge on a name brand without being gaudy.

She loves a storied look, so she always pulls in something vintage or vintage inspired.

A modern twist - clean lines and structured

And from these elements, she has always decorated her homes in the same way.

I have had the pleasure of helping her decorate two homes she has lived in here in Houston (no pro photos were taken at the time).

She has now moved away to London, and she is in the throes of decorating her small flat, which she has also consulted with me on.

I use Georgia as an example because I found this to be true for most clients I meet with.

Their style in the way they dress often spills over to what they enjoy being surrounded by in their interiors, or at least how they want to feel in their home.

This doesn't have to mean that if you like bold and colorful outfits, your home has to be bold and colorful everywhere.

It just means in certain areas, or a specific application of bold and colorful would feel good to that individual.

As a designer, it is one of the tools I use to help to define a client's style.

It is one thing to define the style of interior design they would prefer from their clothing, but it is quite another thing to apply it in a way that they will enjoy.

Our client here in the above living room liked a more simple and structured way of dressing. Not too much color and pattern.

We created this room with that foundation in mind, but to allow your eye to linger in the room and not just go right to the views outside, we added a bold pattern in the rug and some subtle pattern and color in the pillow combination.

This was a great way to take the client's preferred way to dress and translating it into something site specific.

In the above breakfast room in the same home, we decided to go a slight bit more colorful to open up the small corner, but still grounding it in a neutral color layer.
